Play: Exploring our Sense of Hearing

We've been under the weather here at the Malloy house, but today the kids were well enough to play a little game where they had to use their sense of hearing to find a musical bear. Aly and Asante would go into the kitchen while we hid a bear that played music for about a minute when we pulled it's cord. Then, they would come out and try to find the bear before the music stopped. Here are a few places we hid it:
by the front door
in the coats
on top of the bookshelf

Asante did a good job of finding the first couple, but coat rack and the bookshelf were a little harder for him. When the bear was in the coats, we had to pull the bear's string three times before he could find it!

For Aly, we realized that we need something a big simpler. The muffled sound was hard for her to pinpoint, so we decided to blindfold her, and hold the bear out for her to walk to. For some reason I didn't get a picture of her doing it, but I did get a picture of Asante.

We tried to get Ada to do it, but she wasn't really interested. :) I think it was interesting because we realized how much the kids rely on their sense of sight. They kept on trying to find where the bear was with their eyes instead of their ears. I think next time I'd hide our iPod because I could then control the volume and the duration of the music.

Soon we'll be exploring our senses of touch and taste, so be sure to be on the lookout for that!
